Swimmers

This piece is a reflection of my time living in Sydney—a city where I fell in love with the ocean, no matter the season and swimming in the ocean on the warmer days, was always my favourite.

The subject of this artwork is the iconic Bondi Icebergs, a spot we often visited to enjoy a drink on warm days and take in the incredible view. While I never swam in the Icebergs pool myself, I was always drawn to watching the strong, determined swimmers doing their laps as waves crashed over the edge and the surfers catching great waves right off the point of the pools.

I chose to paint this scene in an abstract black and white style to bring focus to the contrast in textures—the unpredictable, rough ocean set against the clean lines and structure of the pool’s walls and lanes. During the process, some of my original orange underpainting mixed subtly with the white, creating a sepia-toned warmth that reminds me of the golden late afternoon sun glowing over Icebergs.
